I sail upon the wide ocean,
I swim through the dark sea.
I fly over mountain and meadow,
singing my song for eternity.
I run across the bare tundra,
climb high the great redwood tree.
I play in the cool mountain rivers,
singing the strains of the one melody.
Come fly with me over the mountains and
swim with me through the dark sea.
When we sail upon the wide ocean,
your eyes will see all that my eyes have seen.
Standing on the golden savannah,
I hear the distant calls of my family.
Then cold, clear water flows past my body
as I sing and dance in the sparkling blue sea.
Come fly with me over the mountains and
swim with me through the dark sea.
When we sail upon the wide ocean,
your eyes will see,
your ears will hear,
your heart will know all that my heart knows.
In the spring of 2005, I dreamt I was peacefully sleeping, my check resting upon the deep neck folds of a giant grey whale.ย Later that summer, I found myself floating in a boat in the waters just east of San Juan Island, mesmerized as I watched a young grey whale feeding.
Fly with Me was written around this same time. With gratitude to the whales of Puget Sound.
